  • Invest in self-care. – Nurses find it difficult to get enough sleep, eat well and exercise due to extended shifts and a busy agenda. According to the National Sleep Foundation, seven to nine hours of sleep is recommended for adults. Alongside rest, proper nutrition is important for keeping you from gaining weight and compromising your health. In addition to eating a healthy diet, staying active is key to lowering stress.
  • Ask for help – There might be times when you need help. For instance, you may find yourself overwhelmed with patients at work or struggling to keep up with cleaning the house or cooking meals at home. You should not be afraid to talk to your manager or those around you for help.
  • Learn say no – Give yourself permission to turn down invitations or commitments that will keep you from enjoying leisure time.
  • Consider a realistic schedule – Think about which shifts best correspond to your personal life.
  • Have fun. Do what makes you happy.

Always ensure your mental and physical well-being are being looked after, to ensure patients are getting top quality care, alongside yourself.
